What is The Dog Dignity Collective?
The Dog Dignity Collective is a nationwide grooming support initiative by The Dog Rescue Project.
We exist to ensure that no dog in Aotearoa lives in discomfort due to untreated matting, preventable coat neglect, or lack of access to professional grooming.
For many families, grooming has become financially out of reach. For some there is a lack of understanding how important grooming is. But grooming is not cosmetic, it is welfare.
Through a network of professional groomers across New Zealand, Dogs With Dignity provides:
Subsidised grooming for families in hardship
Fully funded emergency de-matting cases
Items to help with coat care
Education to prevent future neglect
We believe every dog deserves comfort, care, and dignity regardless of circumstance.
Why Lack of Grooming is a Welfare Issue for Long-Coated Dogs
For dogs with long or thick coats, regular grooming is not just about appearance, it is a basic welfare need. When grooming is neglected, a dog’s coat can quickly become matted and dirty, leading to significant discomfort, health problems, and reduced quality of life.
Severe matting is painful.
When long fur is not brushed regularly, it forms tight mats that pull constantly on the dog’s skin. This can cause pain whenever the dog moves and may restrict normal movement. In serious cases, matting can become so tight that it bruises the skin underneath or causes sores.
Matting hides and worsens health problems.
Thick or tangled coats can hide wounds, parasites, infections, and lumps. Without grooming, these problems can go unnoticed and untreated. Mats can also trap moisture, dirt, and bacteria against the skin, creating an environment where painful skin infections can develop.
Dogs can suffer long-term skin damage.
When mats form close to the skin, they prevent air from circulating and can cause irritation and inflammation. Over time this may lead to sores, infections, and significant discomfort for the dog.
Poor grooming can impact mobility and hygiene.
Heavy matting can restrict movement around the legs, chest, and tail. Mats around the rear of the dog can trap faeces and urine, which is both uncomfortable and unhygienic, increasing the risk of infection.
In severe cases, neglect can lead to suffering.
Dogs with extremely neglected coats are sometimes found with coats that have formed a solid layer of tangled fur across their bodies. These cases can require extensive shaving and veterinary treatment, and the dog may have been living with pain for a long time.
For these reasons, regular grooming is an essential part of responsible dog care. Brushing long-coated dogs frequently helps prevent matting, protects skin health, and ensures any potential health issues are noticed early.
Ensuring a dog’s coat is properly maintained is not just good practice, it is a key part of meeting their welfare needs and preventing unnecessary suffering.
Who is this support for?
Support through The Dignity Dog Collective is intended for situations where grooming has become difficult to access.
This may include:
Dogs with severe matting or coat issues
Families experiencing temporary hardship and/or mental health issues.
People supporting a neighbour, family member, or community member who needs assistance
If you’re unsure whether the programme is the right fit, you are still welcome to ask.
How can you help?
We need groomers, and donations, to make this happen.
If you can help with a little, or a lot, everything helps!
Requesting Help for Yourself or Someone Else
You can request support for:
Your own dog
A family member’s dog
A neighbour or community member
Someone you support through your work or organisation
Our team will review each request and work with our partner groomers to see what support may be available in your area.
Because our grooming partners generously donate their time and services, availability may vary depending on location and demand.
A Kind Reminder
Asking for help is not something to feel embarrassed about.
Dogs rely on people, and sometimes people need support too.
The Dog Dignity Collective exists to bring together groomers, communities, and dog lovers to make sure every dog can live with comfort and dignity.
Being Fair to Everyone
The Dog Dignity Collective is made possible through the generosity of groomers, donors, and volunteers.
To ensure we can help as many dogs as possible, we ask everyone using the programme to keep a few things in mind:
Support is intended for situations where grooming has become difficult to access.
In most cases, assistance is provided once to help restore the dog’s coat and comfort.
Ongoing grooming will remain the responsibility of the owner.
Priority may be given to dogs experiencing discomfort or welfare concerns.
Availability depends on local groomer capacity.
We do not require proof of income or financial documentation.
We simply ask that people use the programme honestly and respectfully so we can continue supporting those who need it.
