Khai
MALE | BORN APPROX NOVEMBER 2022 | SCHNAUZER
LOCATED IN AUCKLAND
Khai would like everyone to know that he is a highly intelligent, sophisticated schnauzer with places to go, things to do, and absolutely no interest in being a fancy cushion with legs.
Inside the house, he is affectionate, cuddly and full of smooches. But Khai is not looking for a quiet life spent simply looking handsome. He wants action, stimulation and a job that keeps his clever brain busy. He would love to try something like agility, scent work or another dog sport, even if it is purely for fun.
Clip on his lead and Khai is ready for adventure. He is an enthusiastic walker who loves getting out, exploring and seeing what the world has to offer. His excitement can sometimes get the better of him, so his lead skills are still a work in progress. With continued training, consistency and an owner who enjoys keeping active, he has all the potential to become a fantastic walking companion.
Khai needs a more experienced home that can provide clear expectations, consistency and plenty of positive guidance. If you are too soft or let the rules slide, this clever boy will spot the opportunity immediately. He needs someone who will enjoy working with him, keep him on the straight and narrow, and channel all that intelligence into good choices.
He has also recently discovered his voice and takes neighbourhood security very seriously. His new family will need to continue helping him learn when his input is useful and when the situation is already under control.
Khai is convinced he has a future as a medical detection dog. Meet him once and he may politely place his nose directly into your face for a thorough breath inspection. We cannot guarantee he will detect illness, but he will definitely know what you had for lunch.
He is an absolute superstar in his crate and now flies up and down stairs with confidence, although his braking system on the way down could still use an upgrade.
Unlike most dogs, Khai believes squeakers deserve freedom, not destruction. Rather than tearing his toys apart, he carefully works away at them, patiently waiting for the squeaker to make its own decision to leave.
Bath time was not his favourite experience. He filed one formal complaint before accepting his fate, although we suspect he secretly knows just how handsome he looks afterwards.
Khai is a sweet, funny and affectionate dog with a brilliant brain and loads of potential. He is looking for an active, experienced owner who sees training as something enjoyable to do together and will give him the structure, stimulation and adventures he needs.
If you want a clever best mate who will keep you laughing, learning and moving, Khai could be exactly the dog you have been waiting for.

A Note on Training and Adopting Our Dogs
Our dogs are wonderful, and we invest a great deal of time and effort into their training and preparation. However, no dog is “perfectly trained” or ready to adopt without any ongoing work.
All dogs go through normal life stages and changes — puppyhood, adolescence, adulthood, aging, moving homes, and adapting to new environments. Any of these can lead to stress, uncertainty, or moments of testing boundaries.
Because of this, ongoing training is essential. Training isn’t a one-off task; it’s a continual process that helps you understand your dog’s needs, support them through transitions, and set everyone up for long-term success.
We would expect adopters to maintain the training we’ve started and seek further guidance if needed. We’re always happy to help with information and recommendations for trainers, and provide advice during the trial and adoption process also.
Can't adopt Khai? You can still help.
Although we charge a small adoption fee, this doesn't generally cover the costs of us getting our dogs ready for adoption. Desexing, grooms, vet care, vaccinations, registration, training and variety of other things can go into these dogs. If you'd like to help either on a one off or regular basis we would be grateful for your donation.
