Governance
At The Dog Rescue Project, we believe strong governance is essential to ethical, effective rescue work. Clear structure, transparency, and accountability help ensure we act responsibly, use funds correctly, and always put the dogs first.
Our Governance Structure
Our rescue is overseen by two Trustees, who hold overall responsibility for the organisation. The Trustees ensure the rescue operates legally, ethically, and in line with its charitable purpose and governing documents.
Supporting the Trustees is a Board of four Board Members, who provide guidance, oversight, and support. The Board contributes to strategic planning, policy development, and decision-making to help ensure the rescue remains sustainable and focused on its mission.
Trustees and Board Members work together to provide checks and balances and to ensure decisions are made in the best interests of the dogs, the organisation, and the wider community.
Day-to-Day Operations
Daily rescue activities — including dog intake, foster care, veterinary treatment, adoptions, and volunteer coordination — are carried out under clear policies and procedures. This helps ensure consistency, animal welfare, and accountability across all areas of the rescue.
Volunteers and foster carers play a vital role and operate under clear guidelines and codes of conduct to support safe, ethical, and responsible rescue work.
Financial Oversight and Transparency
We take financial responsibility seriously. An independent accountant provides professional oversight of our finances to ensure accurate record-keeping and compliance with financial obligations.
All funds raised are used solely to support the rescue’s mission, including:
Veterinary care
Food and supplies
Transport and rescue-related costs
Essential operational expenses
Trustees and Board Members do not personally profit from rescue funds. Any payments are limited to approved expenses or legitimate, declared roles where permitted.
Accountability and Openness
We are committed to being open and honest with our supporters, adopters, volunteers, and partners. Fundraising activities clearly state their purpose, and we aim to provide updates wherever possible on how funds are used and the impact of our work.
Our policies and procedures are reviewed regularly to ensure we remain ethical, responsible, and aligned with best practice.
Animal Welfare Commitment
The welfare of dogs is always our top priority. Decisions are made with the dogs’ best interests at heart and supported by veterinary and trainers advice where needed. We comply with New Zealand animal welfare legislation and recognised best-practice standards.
Why Governance Matters
Rescue work relies on trust. Strong governance and independent financial oversight help ensure donations are used responsibly, decisions are made fairly, and animal welfare remains the central focus. Transparency and accountability help build confidence with our community and ensure the rescue can continue helping dogs who need it most.
