Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more about The Dog Rescue Project?

We've created some FAQs for the most commonly asked and repeated questions.

These are general questions, but if you want to know more about Adoptions or Foster they have their own FAQ sections, just click below!

Why do we have an online store?

Long story short - because we need this money to ensure the dogs in our care get everything they need, and this costs a LOT.

Every dog that comes into our care must be desexed, vaccinated, and microchipped. This isn’t optional - it’s super, SUPER important to keep them healthy and to prevent more unwanted litters from being born into already overcrowded rescue systems.

Desexing helps stop the cycle.
Vaccinations protect dogs from serious and potentially fatal diseases.
Microchipping ensures they can always find their way home.

On top of that, many of our dogs also need extra surgeries, dental work, or specialist vet care, which quickly adds to the cost of rescue. Not to mention training and all their equipment from leads, to crates, to enrichment and everything in between.

Our online shop is one of the ways we fund this lifesaving work. Every purchase directly helps pay for essential vet treatment, anything else they need and gives dogs the best possible chance at a healthy, happy future.

Without money, we simply couldn’t do this.

When you support our online shop, you’re not just buying something — you’re helping stop the cycle and giving rescue dogs a real second chance You can check out our online shop here https://www.thedogrescueproject.org.nz/page/shop/

We've found a dog, can you take it?

No we can't, as that dog may belong to someone and the law is clear on what needs to be done if this happens.
We've created a page on what to do HERE

Can I come and meet all the dogs?

As we are a foster based organisation we are unable to allow this.
All our dogs live in peoples homes so we can't have people visiting their homes.
We do have regular events that you can come and meet dogs though, find out more HERE

How can I contact you?

The easiest way is via email. We have forms you can fill in HERE

We do not have a phone number as our team work full time outside volunteering and are unable to answer calls.

Your dogs are listed on Trademe, does that mean they are for sale?

Not at all. Our dogs are advertised under "Dogs to Adopt", which is different from selling. All people interested still have to go through our adoption process to be considered.

Why don't you tell us about the dogs past?

We often don't share our dogs pasts for many reasons - privacy issues, legally unable to or simply there is nothing to tell.  We always say that we don't share a dogs past unless it is pertinent to their future.
But we've seen a post that says it so much better than we ever could.

From the team at Mirror Image K9:

If you’ve adopted a dog from a shelter, first of all, thank you. With shelters at full capacity so often, you’ve been a small part of the solution to such a pervasive problem. But just as important, you’ve been a BIG part of the solution for YOUR dog.

Some rescue dogs come from really tough backgrounds. They carry baggage with them that needs to be unpacked with the support of their new families. Some rescue dogs manage to avoid too much of a struggle on their way to their forever homes and are taken care of by loving foster families while they patiently await their perfect fit.

But the common thing that ties most rescue dogs together is…they had a life before you. And because we’re humans, we tend to imagine the worst of the worst. Sometimes, we know for a fact what our dogs went through to get to us. Other times, we assume our dog went through traumatic experiences based on certain behaviors they offer us when we first get to know them.

But if there is one thing I can urge you to do, regardless of what you know or don’t know about your dog’s past…Let it go.

Let them move on. Let them finally stop being a rescue and become rescued.

It doesn’t matter what happened before you. Because you’re here now.

They’re safe now. By treating them like you have something to make up for, you hold them in the past.

Let them feel the amazing feeling of being loved and cared for by a permanent family just because they’re them, not because they may have gone through something horrible.

Let the past go.

Enjoy your rescued dog.

Let them be rescued.

I can't have my dog anymore, can you take it?

There is no blanket answer to this, as it depends on one main factor - whether we have a foster home available.
We do ask those needing help to fill out our rehoming form, and provide as much information as possible. The more accurate info we have around the dogs needs, the easier it is for us to assess suitability for our fosters.
You can find this form HERE
