Callan

MALE | BORN APPROX AUGUST 2022 | WESTIE

LOCATED IN AUCKLAND

Small in stature, big on personality, and absolutely convinced that every human he meets should be his best friend. Meet Callan!

This sweet, funny little guy has settled beautifully into foster care, and it's safe to say he's made quite the impression. With his natural confidence, love of people and easygoing attitude, Callan is proving to be an all-around fantastic little companion.

If there's one thing you should know about Callan, it's that he LOVES people.

Whether you're out exploring, pottering around the house or having a quiet day in the office, Callan is happy to be involved. He's a big fan of affection and will never turn down a good pat, but he's also perfectly capable of doing his own thing.

He enjoys human company without needing to be the centre of attention every second. He's simply a friendly little guy who appreciates having his people around.

Out and about, Callan is a confident little character who takes new experiences in his stride. Busy markets? No problem. A day at the office? Even better if there are people offering pats! Another dog making a fuss across the street? He might have a look, but he's generally happy to move along with a little guidance.

He's also a pretty good walking buddy. He likes to stay close, checks in with his humans regularly and has surprisingly good recall. He's quite capable of keeping up on longer walks with the big dogs, although he'd probably prefer a more leisurely adventure. With his low-to-medium energy levels, Callan would love a home that offers a nice balance of outings, enrichment and quality relaxation time.

And when it comes to other dogs? He's a pretty cool kid.

Callan has fitted into life with larger dogs beautifully. He's generally polite with his introductions but isn't particularly interested in making every dog his new best friend. He's perfectly happy sharing his space with other dogs, but would be just as content being the only dog in the household.

He's also a clever little foodie! His recall is good, he understands sit (although sometimes the world is simply too interesting to listen), and he's making lovely progress with his crate training, household manners and waiting at thresholds. His stay is still a work in progress, but with his love of food and willingness to learn, he's making great progress.

Callan is generally quiet around the house, although he will occasionally alert bark when someone arrives. He's learning to settle when asked and is becoming more comfortable spending time in his crate, even if he occasionally feels he's missing out on something exciting.

Of course, no dog is perfect, and Callan has a few things his future family will need to continue working on.

He's carrying a little extra weight, so regular exercise will help him get back into shape. He also has skin issues that will require ongoing management throughout his life. With appropriate veterinary care and a family committed to keeping him comfortable, these should be manageable.

What kind of home is Callan looking for?

We think Callan would thrive with a family who appreciates a loving, confident little dog with a cheeky streak. He could happily live with another suitable dog or enjoy being the centre of attention as an only dog.

Because of his sensitivity around certain handling, we'd recommend a home with dog-savvy children over 12 who understand the importance of giving dogs their space.

A home without cats is essential, and he hasn't been tested with other animals.

Callan doesn't need someone who wants to climb mountains every weekend. He'd much rather have a family who enjoys getting out and about, spending time together and then heading home for some well-earned relaxation.

Callan is sweet, funny, affectionate and just a genuinely cool little dog.

He's got confidence, character and a whole lot of love to give. He might need a little help polishing his manners, but what he already brings to the table is pretty special.

And if you're looking for a confident little companion who enjoys life's adventures just as much as a good pat and a relaxing afternoon?

Callan might just be your perfect match. ❤️

A Note on Training and Adopting Our Dogs

Our dogs are wonderful, and we invest a great deal of time and effort into their training and preparation. However, no dog is “perfectly trained” or ready to adopt without any ongoing work.

All dogs go through normal life stages and changes — puppyhood, adolescence, adulthood, aging, moving homes, and adapting to new environments. Any of these can lead to stress, uncertainty, or moments of testing boundaries.

Because of this, ongoing training is essential. Training isn’t a one-off task; it’s a continual process that helps you understand your dog’s needs, support them through transitions, and set everyone up for long-term success.

We would expect adopters to maintain the training we’ve started and seek further guidance if needed. We’re always happy to help with information and recommendations for trainers, and provide advice during the trial and adoption process also.

Can't adopt Callan? You can still help.

Although we charge a small adoption fee, this doesn't generally cover the costs of us getting our dogs ready for adoption. Desexing, grooms, vet care, vaccinations, registration, training and variety of other things can go into these dogs. If you'd like to help either on a one off or regular basis we would be grateful for your donation.
