Who Are The Dog Rescue Project?

The Dog Rescue Project is an Auckland dog rescue dedicated to helping neglected, abused, and vulnerable dogs through rescue, rehabilitation, education, and rehoming. Guided by our mission to Rescue, Rehabilitate, Educate, we work to improve the lives of dogs while supporting the people who care for them across New Zealand.

Our mission goes beyond rescue alone. We work closely with dog owners to provide education, guidance, and practical support, helping create safer, healthier, and more positive environments for their dogs. By empowering owners with the right tools and knowledge, we aim to create lasting change and strengthen the bond between people and their animals.

For dogs relinquished into our care, we provide rehabilitation, veterinary care, foster placement, and carefully matched forever homes through our Auckland based network of volunteers and foster families. Every dog deserves compassion, safety, and the opportunity to thrive, regardless of breed, size, age, or background.

We also collaborate closely with Council Animal Shelters, the SPCA, and ethical rescue organisations throughout New Zealand to support dogs most at risk, improve animal welfare outcomes, and reduce pressure on local shelter systems.

Whether responding to cases of neglect, supporting families in crisis, or advocating for responsible dog ownership, The Dog Rescue Project is committed to creating better outcomes for dogs and the communities they live in.

Our Missions

To advocate for and support dogs in our communities to achieve better health and wellbeing for the dogs through:

  • Empowering dog owners by providing them with the tools necessary to remove the need for dogs to be neglected and abused

  • Acting with integrity, and work alongside any other organisations needed, to provide a unified response to each case

  • Identifying opportunities to provide rehabilitative care and rehoming to any dogs that are relinquished so they can live a happy, fulfilling life, no matter their size or breed

  • Providing education and community initiatives centred on reducing the number of unwanted dogs and improving the health of the dogs who need it the most.

No one can do everything, but everyone can do something

Where do our dogs come from?

This is a common question, and while we can't provide exact details due to privacy issues, we do keep statistics which may help you understand how dogs enter our care.

We update these annually. If you wish to see previous statistics there are HERE
